140. Mother's Day loot

I am so proud of my 6-year-old for keeping his Mom's Day gifts for me a secret 'til today.  It didn't stop him from reminding me every day for the last 5 days, several times per day, that he had four gifts for me and that I would like them all.  Nor did it stop him from charging into my room at 6 a.m. today, to wake me up, with an envelope full of said gifts behind his back.

One of the gifts was the kindergarten equivalent of a mind map or something (tho I am not even really sure what a mind map is -- I have just seen them and think this gift looks like those mind maps).  He had written out all these words that describe me, including "sewer" as in sewist, "speshl" as in special, and "tall".  And yes, he really did mean tall, which is sooooo very endearing.

Along with being sort of the opposite of tall, as far as adults go, I have pretty puny wrists.  I've always wanted a leather bracelet with some serious hardware -- grommets, studs, a big buckle, etc. -- but they don't generally make those in sizes that fit my wrists.  So for Mother's Day I made myself a simple one, hopefully the first of a few variations!

A couple of weeks back, I picked up a bag of scrap leather from the craft store for a few dollars.  I cut out a strip of 1.25" wide leather with my trusty rotary cutter.  Using a nickel-finish belt buckle and my new grommet pliers (as mentioned in My Perfect Messenger Bag post), I attached one end of the strap to the buckle, then put in two grommets to fasten the whole thing together.  As my son says, easy-peasy lemon squeezy!  I see some belt refashions in my future.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers and mother-ish ones out there!

  3. Happy Mother's Day. Your son did great with his surprises! Great leather bracelet. I might have to try my hand at making one, too.

  5. Gladiator bracelets! Well, I don't know what to call them, but they remind me of the pair worn by Russell Crowe.

The Mother's Day card from my daughter got me all teary eyed. My son's answer to his teacher's homework question, "Why is your mom the best mom in the world," is "Because my Mom loves me." I was deeply touched.

I have yet to post the draft on my lemony woven top. Guess what the working title is. Yup. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy.

  6. Ooh, I saw a very similar leather belt-to-wrist cuff-refasion in my Subversive Seamster book. But your one looks better than the one in the book.

  7. Love the leather bracelet! I've got puny wrists too, but it never struck me that I could make a bracelet myself. Very inspirational.

  8. Ditto to Johanna Lu's comment - small wrists are no fun when trying to find bracelets that don't roll right off your hand. I love this creation!
